WarGames Remake Finds Its Screenwriter

Back in July I had the chance to sit down with director Seth Gordon while he was promoting his new comedy, Horrible Bosses. Taking the opportunity to ask about his upcoming slate, which is filled with a variety of different projects, I asked what he thinks will be his next film. While he didn't have a precise answer, he said that once the script for the WarGames was written it would rise to the top of the pile. Now that's one step closer to happening.

Deadline has learned that Noah Oppenheim has been hired by MGM to script the 21st century take on the 1983 John Badham film. While Oppenheim doesn't have any writing credits for films that have made it all the way through production, he was hired a few months back to rewrite Summit's The Secret Life of Houdini, wrote the script for Jackie (which both Darren Aronofsky and Rachel Weisz have been attached to since April 2010) and the English-language remake of Snabba Cash.

Brian Kirk Could Direct Tom Cruise's Paper Wings After Thor 2

When we first wrote about Paper Wings in those halcyon days of March 2010, the headline was irresistible: "Reese Witherspoon and Tom Cruise will fall in love at the rodeo." The romance, about a country singer and a rodeo champ who fall for each other, seemed like a perfect career boost for both actors, who at the time hadn't had big box office hits in several years. We didn't hear much about Paper Wings after that, but today Variety reports that Game of Thrones and likely Thor 2 director Brian Kirk has gotten the directing job. Is it finally time for Witherspoon and Cruise to strap on their cowboy boots?

Well, maybe not. Though Kirk is in active negotiations to director, there's no cast officially attached, even with Cruise planning to develop the script with Kirk after helping pick the director himself. He'll probably want to wait to see how Mission Impossible-- Ghost Protocol treats him this winter before moving on to this, though with the script still in development he'll have plenty of time to get there. Witherspoon, on the other hand, probably has nothing to lose here-- her spring romance Water for Elephants made a healthy $115 worldwide, so it's clear people still want to see her in romantic roles. Her next big box office test will be This Means War, an action comedy co-starring Tom Hardy and Chris Pine that comes to theaters next February. From there I could easily see her being ready to go more in the direction of her Oscar-winning role as June Carter Cash and put on the country music twang again.

Christina Hendricks Gets Some Lascivious Attention In Red-Band Trailer For The Family Tree

published: 2011-08-19 17:33:19 Author: Katey Rich
Even though it's coming to theaters next week, the indie comedy The Family Tree is keeping a pretty low profile-- and at this point in the summer, when a lot of distributors try to cast off movies they're not that invested in, it might not be a good sign. Still, the movie stars a lot of people you've heard of like Hope Davis and Dermot Mulroney, and the newly released red band trailer features Mad Men siren Christina Hendricks both complaining about a dildo and receiving some oral attention under a desk at work. I don't care how classy you are, that merits a click. Take a look below.

Gerard Butler May Be Circling Submarine Thriller Hunter Killer

published: 2011-08-19 16:25:39 Author: Sean O'Connell
Gerard Butler’s on a world-saving kick lately. Shortly after the trailer for his drug-dealer-turned-freedom-fighter drama Machine Gun Preacher reached the Web, we’re seeing a story that links the burly 300 star to another thriller that would cast Butler as the captain of some butt-kicking Navy SEALS.

The story would be Hunter Killer, the name given to an adaptation of Don Keith and George Wallace’s novel Firing Point, which has been optioned by producer Neil Moritz’s Original Films with a potential to be distributed by Relativity Media. Coming Soon posted the news that Butler’s name was being considered for the role of Joe Glass, the captain of a submarine who must lead a team behind enemy lines in Russia to stop an adversary from launching an all-out war against the United States. At least they’re not officially calling it a remake of Crimson Tide or The Hunt for Red October.

Sam Worthington And Jeffrey Dean Morgan Hunt A Kidnapper In Trailer For Texas Killing Fields

published: 2011-08-19 14:58:09 Author: Will LeBlanc
Hopefully you haven’t had your fill of Sam Worthington just yet because he doesn’t seem to be slowing down. He’ll be joining vigilante heroes Jeffrey Dean Morgan--The Comedian from Watchmen--and Chloe Grace Moretz, more easily recognizable as the purple haired ass kicker Hit Girl from Kick Ass, in Texas Killing Fields, which is set to premier at the Venice Film Festival in September and then hit theaters in October.

A new trailer has arrived showing off just how gritty this film will be. Set on the backdrop of a balmy mid-summer Texas, we follow two cops, Worthington and Morgan, who follow a case into the nearby oil fields dubbed "the killing fields", where bodies are regularly dropped and frequently never found. When a local girl (Moretz) goes missing, the two detectives do everything they can to find her and save her life. Check out the trailer below.
