Benjamin Walker in Talks to Play the Archangel Michael in PARADISE LOST; Alex Proyas Describes His Vision

by Brendan Bettinger  Posted: August 3rd, 2011

Benjamin Walker, the man who will be Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, is in negotiations with Legendary Pictures to star in Alex Proyas’ adaptation of Paradise Lost.  Walker is up for the role of Michael, the archangel engaged in an epic battle of good and evil with Lucifer (Bradley Cooper), who mounts an army after after he is cast out of heaven.  Proyas is striving for a distinct and magnificent aesthetic with cutting-edge visual effects.  Hunter was very impressed with what he saw at the Comic-Con panel, suggesting “this movie could be one of the most visually breathtaking things ever projected on the silver screen.”  To give us a taste, Legendary released this enigmatic piece of concept art.
Production will begin in January in Sidney, which allows Cooper to shoot The Silver Linings Playbook in the fall.  Legendary is eying the end of 2013 for the 3D release.  Hit the jump to hear how Proyas describes his vision for the film.

Natasha Lyonne and June Diane Raphael Join Kristen Wiig’s IMOGENE

by Jason Barr    Posted: August 3rd, 2011

American Pie‘s Natasha Lyonne and June Diane Raphael (Going the Distance) have joined the cast of co-directors Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pucini’s (American Splendor) Imogene. Also starring Kristen Wiig, Annette Bening, and Darren Criss, the film centers on a woman (Wiig) who fakes her suicide in an attempt to reunite with an ex. When the plan goes awry, she finds herself in the custody of her New Jersey caricature, gambling-addict mother (Bening).
Per Variety, Lyonne will play a Jersey Shore-esque gal who works on the boardwalk. Details regarding Raphael’s character are not divulged. Imogene is written by Michelle Morgan (Middle of Nowhere) with Wiig on board to executive produce alongside Steve Golin of Anonymous Content. Lyonne is currently shooting American Reunion and recently joined the sci-fi/drama The Last Day on Earth. As for Raphael, she penned the 2009 rom-com Bride Wars and previously appeared in projects of varying quality such as Year One and Zodiac. She also has a role in Adult Swim’s NTSF:SD:SUV.

Second Trailer for MONEYBALL Starring Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: August 3rd, 2011

Have you had your fill of trailers today with The Darkest Hour, Killer Elite, and In Time?  Well open up that belt buckle one more notch because we’ve got yet another new piece of advertising for you.  Sony Pictures has released a second trailer for Bennett Miller’s adaptation of Moneyball starring Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill.  It plays like the first trailer:  financially-poor baseball team the Oakland As keep losing, angry general manager Billy Beane (Pitt), reinvents the game by using statistics instead of the tired conventional wisdom, Beane becomes a controversial figure who may lose his job, Oakland As triumph, everybody hugs.  This new trailer is basically the same thing with some new footage.  Despite the simple trajectory of the trailer’s arc, I’m looking forward to the movie because I dug the book, Aaron Sorkin worked on the screenplay, and I’m a fan of Pitt and Hill.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Moneyball opens September 23rd but will first play at the Toronto International Film Festival.

New Trailer for IN TIME

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: August 3rd, 2011

I thought we had already covered this trailer for In Time so I put off writing it up.  I could have sworn there was a new trailer released only a week ago, and I was right.  But this is a new trailer!  It’s pretty similar to the old trailer!  It hits you with a cool sci-fi premise (there’s a future where everyone lives until their 25 unless they have more time so time is used as currency) and then aims for broader appeal by selling an action flick where Justin Timberlake is on the run with Amanda Seyfried as his hostage/protection from evil rich people and the cops.  I really want In Time to work as smart sci-fi and not just as the premise for a standard action movie. Adam liked what he saw at the film’s Comic-Con presentation so that’s a good sign.
Hit the jump to check out the new-ish trailer.  The film also stars Cillian Murphy, Vincent Kartheiser, Alex Pettyfer, Johnny Galecki, and Olivia Wilde.  In Time opens October 28th.

Trailer for THE DARKEST HOUR Starring Emile Hirsch

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: August 3rd, 2011

The trailer for the alien invasion flick The Darkest Hour has gone online.  While we’ve been inundated with alien movies this year, you should know that The Darkest Hour picked up some positive buzz from it’s Comic-Con presentation and the concept art looks pretty neat.  The Moscow setting is also a nice change of pace.  That’s right, America: other countries sometimes get invaded by aliens too.  As for the trailer, it starts out a little too much like “Hey!  Another alien invasion movie!  I’m sure you’re in no way tired of these!”  But once it reveals its concept, that the aliens feed on electricity and that a small band of survivors has to come up with some inventive ways to stay alive, then it gets interesting.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film stars Emile Hirsch, Olivia Thirlby, Max Minghella, and Rachael TaylorThe Darkest Hour opens in 3D on December 23rd. ...........

New Trailer for KILLER ELITE

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: August 3rd, 2011

You know what I haven’t seen in a really long time?  A Jason Statham movie with a lot of violence.  Thank goodness for Killer Elite because I think this action-thriller genre could really fit Statham’s acting style.  There’s punching, shooting, explosions, and you don’t really see that in his movies any more.  Also, making the movie look like it was shot almost entirely through a blue filter?  Inspired.  And you also have Robert De Niro once again showing that he is in no way just collecting a paycheck.
Oh, darn.  I ran out of sarcasm.  Hit the jump to check out the trailer and hear idiotic lines like “It isn’t over until both sides say it is.”  Killer Elite opens September 23rd.

Brad Pitt Puts Together A Winning Team In New Moneyball Trailer

published: 2011-08-03 15:04:49 Author: Eric Eisenberg
Who doesn't love a great baseball movie? Sure, there are people out there that don't like the sport and find it boring (Note: I don't understand you), but it's impossible to deny that the two work together like spaghetti and meatballs. From Field of Dreams to Bull Durham and from Pride of the Yankees to The Sandlot, it's a legacy that's hard to tarnish and it doesn't look like Bennett Miller's Moneyball will.

Based on the book by Michael Lewis and adapted by Oscar winners Aaron Sorkin and Steven Zaillian, the film follows Billy Beane (Brad Pitt), the general manager of the Oakland Athletics who has reached the end of his rope. Unable to form a winning team with the little amount of money being provided by upper management, Beane decides to go another route and abandon traditional scouting strategies. Teaming up with the young Peter Brand (Jonah Hill), they devise a system that not only turns the team around, but changes baseball entirely.

The Killer Elite Rocks A New Trailer Like A Hurricane

published: 2011-08-03 12:16:43 Author: Josh Tyler
Technically The Killer Elite is based on a true story, but the movie’s trailers suggest that writer/director Gary McKendry isn’t going to let that get in the way of making a completely kick-ass action movie. Unless you think people can actually do spinning martial arts flips while tied to a chair? Probably not, but I sure as hell want to see more of that in this film.

The Killer Elite has a new trailer and it’s the most head-punching look we’ve had at this movie yet. It stars Jason Statham as a ex-special ops agent brought out of retirement to help his mentor, played by Robert DeNiro, take down three assassins lead by a mustachioed Clive Owen. This trailer will rock you like a hurricane.

The Darkest Hour Trailer: Emile Hirsch And Olivia Thirlby Fight Aliens

published: 2011-08-03 10:28:32 Author: Katey Rich
You'd think the mini-trend of watching young, callow people run away from an alien attack in a major city would have ended after the disastrous Skyline, but the direct descendants of Cloverfield are at it again in The Darkest Hour, the new film produced by Timur Bekmambetov and directed by Chris Gorak. The first trailer for the movie has premiered today on iTunes; you can download it there in HD (on the program on your desktop, not at Apple's website) or check it out embedded below.
As you'd probably expect from a film produced by the director of Wanted and the Day Watch/Night Watch movies, the visuals seem to be the key here-- the aliens aren't visible to the naked human eye, so have to be identified by electricity and the bizarre effect they have on the humans and animals they kill. It seems like there's also some kind of alien vision going on, in which we see objects like the cop car or even humans through what these electricity-seeking aliens might look for. It's also a little strange to see the likes of Olivia Thirlby and Emile Hirsch-- two actors known for best their indie roles in movies like Juno and Into the Wild-- running around in a giant alien invasion movie. Even though we've seen this plot any number of times already, The Darkest Hour at least looks different, which can go a long way toward making an old concept feel fresh again. ........

Latest Trailer For In Time Finally Gets It Right

published: 2011-08-03 10:12:21 Author: Katey Rich
By my count we've now seen three trailers for In Time, the Andrew Niccol-directed thriller starring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried. The first was a teaser shown at Comic Con and debuting online a few days later, setting up in very basic text the concept of a future in which time, not money, is the primary unit of currency. Timberlake plays a working class guy who, for mysterious reasons, is handed years and years of time by a rich man with a death wish. He's then forced to go on the run from the authorities who think he's murdered the man, and takes with him as a hostage Amanda Seyfried, the daughter of one of the wealthiest men in his city (played by Mad Men's Vincent Kartheiser).  ......... That trailer was followed up quickly by another trailer that premiered at Access Hollywood but mysteriously disappeared not long after. Now a third, glorious HD trailer has finally shown up at Apple, and you can also watch it embedded below. It's the best of the three, clearly establishing the rules of this world while also hinting at some excellent chase scenes, and even giving us the unsettling sight of Olivia Wilde playing Justin Timberlake's mom (remember, in this world, your wealth = time, and that means you never age). Check it all out below.
