Michael Gracey to Direct P.T. Barnum Biopic THE GREATEST SHOWMAN ON EARTH Starring Hugh Jackman

by Matt Goldberg   Posted: August 17th, 2011

Back in August 2009, we reported that Hugh Jackman was set to star in the P.T. Barnum biopic The Greatest Showman on Earth and a short two years later that project now has a director.  THR reports that commercial director Michael Gracey will helm the project which focuses on the legendary circus owner/swindler and his infatuation with opera singer Jenny Lind aka “the Swedish Nightingale”.  Back in 2009 we reported that Anne Hathaway was being courted for Lind but now it appears that the role is wide open.  Jenny Bicks (Sex and the City) wrote the script, and Jackman will produce alongside John Palermo and Laurence Mark.  This is the second film Gracey has signed to direct this month.  We reported on August 3rd that he had signed on to direct Disney’s China-set Snow White film (because we needed another fucking Snow White movie) The Order of the Seven.
Hit the jump for a recap of Jackman’s other projects.

Casting Call: Breslin to Star in THE CLASS PROJECT; Knightley and Collins Eyed for Lead in ROMEO & JULIET Re-Imagining, ROSALINE

We have a couple quick casting stories for you this afternoon.  First up, Abigail Breslin has signed on to star in the dark indie drama The Class Project.  Per Variety, “Story follows two sisters who, tired of their mother’s alcoholism and her abusive boyfriends, take matters into their own hands and plot to kill her.”  I want to make fun of that logline, but it actually sounds like an intriguing premise and a nice development for the Little Miss Sunshine star.  Stan Brooks will direct from a script by Fabrizio Filippo and Adam Till.  Shooting begins later this month.
Breslin recently did some voice acting for Gore Verbinski’s Rango and she’ll next be seen in Gerry Marshall’s massive romantic comedy New Year’s Eve.  Hit the jump for casting news on the Romeo & Juliet spinoff/re-imagining, Rosaline.

New Image From Cameron Crowe’s WE BOUGHT A ZOO

by Jeff Ames    Posted: August 17th, 2011

Not to sound like a grouch, but I hate it when studios releasing dull, uninteresting images to promote their films. I want to see something exciting. In the case of this new photo from Cameron Crowe’s We Bought a Zoo, I would rather see star Matt Damon hanging out with a couple of elephants or monkeys rather than just stare unassumingly at nothing whilst standing next to Scarlett Johansson. The actors don’t even give the zebras room to smug up the joint. What are Damon and Johansson looking at exactly? Is it some sort of animal? A dinosaur? A mirror? Time will tell. At least this photo is more interesting than these early shots.
We Bought a Zoo also stars Thomas Haden Church, Elle Fanning and Patrick Fugit and concerns a father who relocates his family to a zoo as a way of mourning his recently deceased wife. The film opens December 23rd. Cheesy or not, I’m so there.

4 Movie Clips From OUR IDIOT BROTHER

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: August 17th, 2011

Four clips from Our Idiot Brother have gone online.  I dug the film when I saw it at Sundance (back when it was called “My Idiot Brother”–to hell with you, Possessive Singular!) and it’s a great showcase for Rudd who is too often stuck playing the straight man.  The film’s also got a terrific supporting cast that includes Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, Rashida Jones, Adam Scott, Emily Mortimer, Steve Coogan, Kathryn Hahn, and T.J. Miller (who steals almost every scene he’s in).
Hit the jump to check out the clips.  Our Idiot Brother opens August 26th.
