Martin Scorsese Reunites with THE DEPARTED Writer William Monahan for THE GAMBLER Remake; Paramount Eyeing Leonardo DiCaprio to Star
by Jason Barr Posted: August 26th, 2011
Considering it won four Oscars, I’d venture to say that, for the most part, people liked 2006′s The Departed. By that same logic, one would think that reuniting some of the most prominent talent from that film for another crime drama is a good recipe for success. At least Paramount hopes. According to THR, the studio has tapped Martin Scorsese to direct a remake of 1974′s The Gambler starring James Caan and has brought screenwriter William Monahan on board to pen the script. But wait, the good news doesn’t stop there.
Per the report, Paramount is also interested in landing Leonardo DiCaprio to reprise Caan’s role (for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe) as Axel Freed, an English professor from New York whose gambling addiction causes a slew of twists and turns. Unlike Scorsese and Monahan, DiCaprio is not yet attached to the remake. Nevertheless, I’d guess that the talent behind it has to be enough for the film to at least be on the highly coveted actor’s radar. Directed by Karel Reisz, the original was based on a short novel by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. For a little more on the pic, hit the jump for a full plot synopsis.
Trailer for FIREFLIES IN THE GARDEN Starring Ryan Reynolds, Willem Dafoe and Julia Roberts
by Jason Barr Posted: August 26th, 2011 at 10:35 pm
A trailer for writer/director Dennis Lee’s drama Fireflies in the Garden has landed online. Starring Ryan Reynolds, Willem Dafoe, Julia Roberts, Emily Watson, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hayden Panettiere and Shannon Lucio, the film is a semi-autobiographical tale from Lee that focuses on the tumultuous relationships within the Taylor family that are confronted after a tragic car accident kills the matriarch (Roberts).
The film was actually completed back in 2008 and is just now making its way to theaters. Given the amount of star power it contains, I wouldn’t think that bodes well for the final product. That said, I think the cut on display here is plenty effective in setting up the tension between father (Dafoe) and son (Reynolds). Check out the trailer after the jump. Fireflies in the Garden will open to select markets on October 14th. .... http://collider.com/fireflies-in-the-garden-trailer/111856/

The cast of Ben Affleck’s next directorial project Argo continues to be awesome, as Friday Night Lights star Kyle Chandler is the latest to sign on. The Warner Bros. pic now boasts Affleck, Bryan Cranston, John Goodman, Alan Arkin, and Scoot McNairy as part of its stellar cast. USA Today reports (via The Playlist) that Chandler’s role is a small one, but doesn’t add any further details. The film is based upon a 2007 Wired magazine article entitled “How the CIA Used a Fake Sci-Fi Flick to Rescue Americans from Tehran.” The feature documents a rescue mission launched by the CIA for a group of diplomats in Tehran that involved a rouse to convince the Iranian government that the diplomats were actually a Hollywood film crew scouting locations.
Affleck is set in the lead role as the CIA exfiltration expert who develops the plan, with Arkin playing a Hollywood producer who’s also an O.S.S. veteran and is described as “equal parts bookie and rabbi,” Cranston onboard as an Irish CIA agent from Boston, and Goodman playing Oscar-winning Planet of the Apes makeup artist John Chambers who aids the CIA in their mission. George Clooney and Grant Heslov are producing under their Smokehouse banner. Argo is eyeing a 2012 release.

Sony Sets SOURCE CODE Scribe to Write FLATLINERS Remake
by Adam Chitwood Posted: August 26th, 2011
As confirmation that anything and everything is getting a remake, Sony has tapped a scribe to start work on a contemporary update of Joel Schumacher’s 1990 thriller Flatliners. Heat Vision reports that Ben Ripley, who most recently scripted Duncan Jones’ sci-fi surprise hit Source Code, will pen the screenplay. The original flick tells the story of a group of medical students who willingly induce clinical death in order to find out if there’s anything on the other side. The super 90’s cast includes Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, Billy Baldwin and Oliver Platt.
The original film isn’t really anything special, but it’s endearing in a silly 90’s sci-fi sort of way. I really enjoyed Source Code, so maybe Ripley can bring something new to the table. Laurence Mark (Julie and Julia) is set to produce. ..... http://collider.com/flatliners-remake-ben-ripley/111815/
