Mark Wahlberg in Talks to Star in 2 GUNS

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: August 10th, 2011

Mark Wahlberg isn’t my favorite actor working today (I’ve only liked him in a handful of roles) but he’s getting plenty of work.  He’s just wrapped on the crime drama Contraband, he’s signed on to the noir flick Broken City, he’s got the action comedy Good Time Gang, he’s planning to reunite with Will Ferrell for Three Mississippi, and he’s got a slew of other projects to choose from.  Now Wahlberg is adding to another to the list as Deadline reports that he’s in talks to star in the adaptation of Stephen Grant’s graphic novel 2 Guns.  The plot concerns a DEA Agent and a Naval Investigator who unwittingly start investigating each other as they both believe they’re stealing from the mob until they learn they’ve been stealing from the CIA.

Official WORLD WAR Z Synopsis Reveals Key Difference between the Movie and the Book

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: August 10th, 2011

I accept that film adaptations of books will be different.  They have to be and they should be.  However, it’s wise to retain the core concept of the book otherwise the studio is just paying for the name and hoping they’ll sucker in soon-to-be-disappointed fans of the novel.  That appears to be the case with the adaptation of Max Brooks’ World War Z.  The plot of the book takes place after a zombie apocalypse and has a researcher for the UN going around the world to determine the cause.  A mock documentary style would probably work best since the novel has multiple points of view.  I can understand the need to whittle down the movie to a single POV especially when that POV is from a character played by Brad Pitt.
But the official synopsis Paramount just released for the film shows that Paramount has gone far beyond that alteration.  Hit the jump for the synopsis and my reaction.  The movie also stars Mireille Enos, Anthony Mackie, James Badge Dale, and Bryan Cranston.  World War Z is due out December 21, 2012.

First Official Images from CONTAGION and NEW YEAR’S EVE; New Images from DOLPHIN TALE

by Matt Goldberg   Posted: August 10th, 2011

As part of their Fall/Holiday Preview, Warner Bros. has released the first official images from Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion and the rom-com anthology New Year’s Eve.  They’ve also released new images from the family film Dolphin Tale.  The images don’t hold any grand surprises. The Contagion images show that a virus is probably going down. The New Year’s Eve image shows Lea Michele and Jon Bon Jovi making sweet, sweet music together. The Dolphin Tale images show dolphins.
You can check out the images after the jump.  Contagion opens September 9th.  Dolphin Tale opens in 3D on September 23rd.  New Year’s Eve opens December 9th.  Click here for the first image from A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas and click here for the first image from Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.

Warner Bros. thinks they have a serious Oscar contender this year with Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and it’s not tough to see why.  You’ve got a thrice Oscar-nominated director Stephen Daldry (The Reader), Oscar-winning leads Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock, and it will be released in a limited theatrical run on December 25th so it can qualify for Oscar consideration.  It will expand nationwide on January 20, 2012.  Wouldn’t you know it: Oscar nominations are announced on January 24th.  What a coincidence.
This is my long-winded way of leading up to the news that Warner Bros. has released the first image from the movie.  It’s an image of Oskar (Thomas Horn) being held by his father (Hanks) even though the events of the book center around Oskar’s father dying in the 9/11 attacks and Oskar trying to uncover the secret of the key he found in his father’s closet.  Apparently the film has found a way to incorporate Hanks’ character (most likely through flashback).  Hit the jump to check out the image along with the official synopsis.

"Coriolanus" Trailer with Ralph Fiennes and Gerard Butler

Posted: August 10th, 2011 by Staff

Today we have the trailer for Ralph Fiennes' upcoming contemporary adaptation of William Shakespeare's "Coriolanus" play. The film co-stars Gerard Butler (300) and Vanessa Redgrave (Atonement). Check out the trailer below.

Plot: Caius Martius 'Coriolanus' (Fiennes), a revered and feared Roman General is at odds with the city of Rome and his fellow citizens. Pushed by his controlling and ambitious mother Volumnia (Redgrave) to seek the exalted and powerful position of Consul, he is loath to ingratiate himself with the masses whose votes he needs in order to secure the office. When the public refuse to support him, Coriolanus' anger prompts a riot which culminates in his expulsion from Rome. The banished hero then allies himself with his sworn enemy Tullus Aufidius (Butler) to take his revenge on the city.

Fiennes directed the film, which already played at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year. It is next set to appear at the Toronto International Film Festival next month and will hit domestic theaters on December 2nd, likely in limited release.
