Kenny Ortega to Direct DIRTY DANCING Remake

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: August 8th, 2011

With Craig Brewer’s Footloose remake on the way, you can bet your ass that other 1980’s movie about dancing is getting a remake as well. Deadline reports that Lionsgate has set Kenny Ortega (High School Musical) to direct a remake of Dirty Dancing. We actually have Ortega to thank for those taboo dance moves, as he was the choreographer of the 1987 film. Lionsgate is taking a mulligan on the franchise after the 2004 sequel Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights was a bit of a bomb upon its release.
Ortega was actually set to direct the Footloose remake, but eventually dropped out and Brewer and newcomer Kenny Wormald took over (believe it or not, that film is getting some fantastic word-of-mouth). There are no casting decisions or screenwriter announcements for Dirty Dancing as of yet, but the report states that it’s a high priority for Lionsgate so expect things to move quickly.

Russell Crowe Joins Mark Wahlberg in Allen Hughes’ BROKEN CITY

by Matt Goldberg   Posted: August 8th, 2011

Russell Crowe will star opposite Mark Wahlberg in Allen Hughes’ noir drama Broken City.  As we previously reported, Wahlberg is playing an ex-cop turned private detective who is hired by the mayor (Wahlberg) to see if the mayor’s wife is cheating on him. When the wife’s lover ends up dead, the private detective becomes embroiled in the mayor’s scandalous affairs.  Deadline reports the “scandalous affairs” involves the mayor and some shady real-estate dealings.  I don’t know why crimes involving real estate make great noir tales, but they do.  I guess it goes to a corruption of the American dream of owning property.
Wahlberg recently wrapped shooting on Contraband, which is set to open on January 13, 2012.  Crowe is playing Jor-El in Man of Steel and recently shot RZA’s kung-fu flick The Man with the Iron Fists.  No start date has been announced for Broken City.  The film is budgeted at $60 million and comes from a 2008 Black List script by Brian Tucker. ..........

5 Movie Clips from ONE DAY Starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess

by Matt Goldberg   Posted: August 8th, 2011

Five clips from Lone Scherfig’s One Day have gone online.  The film tracks one day (July 15th) over twenty years in the relationship between Emma (Anne Hathaway) and Dexter (Jim Sturgess).  I assumed from the trailers that Emma and Dexter only meet for one day every year, but that’s not what happens at all.  The day is a window into their lives and showing how much they both change, come together, and grow apart over the course of two decades.  If you have a friend you’re close to but rarely see or hear from, you’ll want to give them a call after the movie.  Look out for my review of the film next week.

Tom Cruise Shows off His Explosion Hoodie in Promo Image for MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL

by Matt Goldberg   Posted: August 8th, 2011

Paramount has released a promo image of Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.  I’m not exactly sure why he’s wearing a hoodie if he’s surrounded by burning wreckage since I would assume the fire would keep you nice and toasty.  Also, he may want to stop staring at the camera and get out of there because it’s smoke inhalation and not the fire that will get you in the end.
Hit the jump to check out the promo image.  The film also stars Jeremy Renner, Ving Rhames, Paula Patton, Josh Holloway, Simon Pegg, and Tom Wilkinson. ..........

With director Steven Quale’s Final Destination 5 opening this weekend, we’ve been provided with 5 clips from the film.  Since we all know what a Final Destination movie is about, I’m not going to try and explain the story.  The important thing to know is the movie was shot in 3D and based on the footage I saw at Comic-Con, it’s really worth paying the extra money to see it in 3D.  Trust me, the footage looked fantastic and 3D is the only way I’d see this movie.  In addition, Hunter covered the press junket yesterday and he told me that the film was great and the 3D added a lot.  Look for his video interviews with the cast in the coming days.  Until then, check out the 2D footage after the jump.
Final Destination 5 stars Emma Bell, Nick D’Agosto, Miles Fisher, Arlen Escarpeta, Jacqueline MacInnes Wood, P.J. Byrne, Ellen Wroe, Courtney B. Vance, David Koechner, and Tony Todd.

Trailer for Creepy-Looking Disney Film THE ODD LIFE OF TIMOTHY GREEN

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: August 8th, 2011

The trailer for The Odd Life of Timothy Green stars out innocently enough.  Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton play a couple who are unable to conceive a child.  They write down their hopes and dreams for the child they’ll never have, put the writing in a box, and bury the box in their backyard.  In the middle of the night, they awaken to find a dirt-covered young boy in their house and he’s calling them “mom and dad.”  If that actually happened, you would not be uplifted.  You would be freaked out beyond all reason.  Furthermore, we’re now going to have scores of child molesters burying their wish lists and hoping for a case of sprouted boy.  Is that what you want The Odd Life of Timothy Green?  IS IT?
Hit the jump to check out the saccharine and unnerving trailer.  The film will likely open sometime next year. [Update: We've removed the trailer at the request of the studio.  This version was leaked and the "correct" version will be released tomorrow on Yahoo! Movies.] ...........
