Gabriel Iglesias Joins MAGIC MIKE; Peter Sarsgaard Eyes NIGHT MOVES

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: August 25th, 2011

Magic Mike (aka The Male Stripper Movie) has spent the summer casting beefcakes: Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello Matthew McConaughey.  Finally, one of the male parts will go to… how do I put this delicately… a very, very fat man.  According to THR, comedian Gabriel Iglesias will play the DJ at the strip joint where a veteran dancer (Tatum) teaches the new guy (Pettyfer) everything he knows, including “the protocol of stage performance, the principles of money management, and rules for dating female fans.”  Steven Soderbergh is directing the drama, based on Tatum’s experience in the business at the age of 19.
Hit the jump to read Peter Sarsgaard’s description of Night Moves and his potential involvement in the Kelly Reichardt-directed movie.

Red Band Trailer for DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: August 25th, 2011

FilmDistrict has released a new red band trailer for the horror remake Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark just before it hits theaters this weekend.  There’s no gore or nudity, so I can’t point to the specifics that make it red band.  (Maybe acute creepiness?)  You get a really good look at the creatures, which are always a treat when Guillermo del Toro’s involved.  He’s producing here, and co-wrote the screenplay with Matthew Robbins (Mimic); Troy Nixey directed.
The story centers on an architect (Guy Pearce), his new girlfriend (Katie Holmes), and his daughter (Bailee Madison) during the restoration of Blackwood Manor, a Gothic mansion infested by “an army of beady-eyed, sharp-clawed monsters emerge, small in size but endless in number: the homunculi.”  Watch the trailer after the jump.

Jessica Chastain, Olivia Wilde, Noomi Rapace, Brit Marling and Olga Kurylenko Testing Opposite Tom Cruise for OBLIVION, Now Titled HORIZONS

by Adam Chitwood   Posted: August 25th, 2011

Just last week we reported that a shortlist of actresses were set to test opposite Tom Cruise for his action flick One Shot. Now another set of leading ladies are poised to test opposite Cruise for a different project, Joseph Kosinski’s (Tron: Legacy) sci-fi film Horizons. Showblitz reports that Jessica Chastain, Olivia Wilde, Noomi Rapace, Brit Marling and Olga Kurylenko are the thesps vying that will vie the role this Saturday. Additionally, Universal has scrapped the title Oblivion and is now referring to the project by its former working title Horizons for the time being.
The story takes place in an apocalyptic future that finds humans living in clouds above the uninhabitable Earth, and Cruise plays a soldier relegated to staying on the planet to work on drones that seek out and destroy a savage alien life form. Hit the jump for more information on the contending actresses.
