Anne Hathaway Up for LES MISERABLES and Other Casting Rumors

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: August 29th, 2011

Working Title is doing its very best to secure an A-list cast for the upcoming Les Miserables adaptation, leading with Hugh Jackman as ValjeanIt’s On The Grid reported last week the studio is courting Russell Crowe for Javert, Geoffrey Rush for Thenardier, and Helena Bonham Carter for Madame Thenardier, respectively.  The site also identified Hayden Panettiere, Miranda Cosgrove, Lucy Hale, and Emma Watson as candidates to play Eponine and Cosette, and suggested Amy Adams and Rebecca Hall were up for the role of Fantine.  Make of all that what you will.  Sorry to do this so soon, but I have to make it more complicated.  Broadway World [via The Playlist] hears Anne Hathaway is set to play Fantine, at the recommendation of Jackman.
Hathaway meets the aforementioned A-list requirement, and she sure can sing.  Of course she’s on the list.  It remains to be seen if the rumor will lead anywhere, but it is believable that the role is Hathaway’s if she wants it.  Director Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) is scheduled to shoot Les Miserables early next year, so we should receive a final cast list before the end of the year.  Read the synopsis of the Victor Hugo novel that led to the source musical after the jump.

The UK trailer for Lars von Trier’s upcoming sci-fi/disaster drama Melancholia has landed online. Starring Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Alexander Skarsgård and Kiefer Sutherland, the film features Justine (Dunst) and Michael’s (Skarsgård) wedding taking place against the backdrop of impending doom. I can’t claim to be a huge fan of von Trier’s previous work, but everything I’ve seen from Melancholia has intrigued me. It looks beautifully tragic and, for whatever reason, kind of nostalgic to the point that I can’t wait to see it.
Check out the UK trailer after the jump. Click here to watch the first trailer from the film. Melancholia will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next month as well as the New York Film Festival and Fantastic Fest. It hits UK theaters on October 30th before getting a VOD release in the United States on October 7th. It will receive a limited theatrical release in the U.S. beginning on November 11th.

Six New Character Banners for DRIVE

by Jason Barr    Posted: August 29th, 2011 at 4:55 pm

Six new character banners from director Nicolas Winding Refn’s (Bronson) crime drama Drive have landed online. Starring Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Albert Brooks, Christina Hendricks, Bryan Cranston, Ron Perlman, and Oscar Isaac, the film centers on a stunt driver (Gosling) who moonlights as a wheelman for hire. Matt screened the film at Comic-Con last month and loved it. Steve also loved it and I’m currently angry at both of them for having seen it already. So there.
Check out the new banners after the jump. Drive opens on September 16th at which point my vendetta with my Collider colleagues may finally come to an end. ............

New Trailer and Poster for Pedro Almodovar’s THE SKIN I LIVE IN

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: August 29th, 2011

A new trailer for Pedro Almodovar’s latest effort The Skin I Live In has been released, and I still have no idea what’s going on. The new trailer is fairly similar to the last one we saw back in June, but adds a few new clips as well as a bit of context/exposition (but just barely). The film centers on a plastic surgeon who imprisons and torments his partner in his basement while plotting his revenge against the man who raped his daughter. Antonio Banderas and Elena Anaya star as the surgeon and partner, respectively. Almodovar is an interesting director, but this movie looks straight up surreal.
Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film will be screening at the Toronto Film Festival as well as the New York Film Festival this fall. The Skin I Live In opens October 14.

New Clip from PUNCTURE Starring Chris Evans

by Jason Barr   Posted: August 29th, 2011

A new clip from the healthcare drama Puncture starring Chris Evans is now available online. Co-directed by brothers Adam and Mark Kassen, the film centers on Mike Weiss (Evans), a young Houston lawyer/drug-addict who takes on a case involving a young nurse (Vinessa Shaw) who is pricked by a contaminated needle on the job. As Weiss digs deeper into the case, he uncovers what looks to be a pharmaceutical conspiracy that may be above his pay grade.
Judging from this clip, I’d say Puncture is a functional drama that is undoubtedly being boosted by Evans’ Captain America fame. Hit the jump to watch the new clip. Click here to check out the film’s trailer. Also starring Brett Cullen and Michael Biehn, Puncture opens on September 23rd. .............

George Clooney Will NOT Star in Steven Soderbergh’s THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.

by Jason Barr    Posted: August 29th, 2011

Last November, we reported that George Clooney was in talks to reunite with director Steven Soderbergh (Clooney’s Oceans films and Out of Sight) to star in his adaptation of the 1960′s spy series The Man from U.N.C.L.E.. Now, with the film set to begin lensing for Warner Bros. in February 2012, it appears that Clooney has left the project. News of the actor’s apparent departure comes courtesy of Deadline which seems confident in its report in spite of the fact that they can’t yet pin down a reason for his withdrawal.
It’s believed that Warner Bros. is still set on adhering to The Man from U.N.C.L.E.‘s February 2012 start date. That said, the “A-List” sized hole Clooney leaves behind will not be easily filled. Next up for Soderbergh is his thriller Contagion starring Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, and Marion Cotillard. That film opens on September 9th. Clooney can next be seen in his directorial effort The Ides of March and writer/director Alexander Paynes’s (Sideways) The Descendants which open on October 7th and November 23rd respectively.

Josh Brolin to Star in Spike Lee’s OLDBOY Remake

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: August 29th, 2011

We previously reported that Josh Brolin was the top choice to play the lead in Spike Lee’s remake of Park Chan-Wook’s 2003 Korean revenge flick, Oldboy.  Now Deadline is reporting that he’s got the job.  For those unfamiliar with the original, the story centers on a man who is abducted and imprisoned for 15 years with no idea why or by whom.  When he is suddenly released for seemingly no reason, he goes on a hunt to track down and kill those responsible for his imprisonment.  The original is a thoughtful, thrilling, and a fresh take on the revenge genre and I’m excited to see how Lee is going to handle the American version.  Getting Josh Brolin on board ain’t a bad start.
Deadline reports that Brolin just wrapped on Men in Black III and that he’s moving on to Ruben Fleischer’s Gangster Squad.  The plan is to then shoot Oldboy before moving on to co-star with Kate Winslet in Jason Reitman’s Labor Day, which starts rolling in June.
