Kristin Wiig Set for Passion Project IMOGENE
by Adam Chitwood Posted: July 12th, 2011 at 2:24 pm

Coming off the wild success of Bridesmaids, the highest grossing female R-rated comedy of all time (and the sixth highest grossing romantic comedy), Kristen Wiig has a bit of clout. The actress is using the momentum from the Judd Apatow-produced film to get a passion project of hers off the ground: Imogene. Variety reports that the actress has been trying to get the project moving for two years now, and production is finally set to begin on August 8th.

Wiig will star in the film as a New York playwright who fakes suicide in order to get the attention of her ex-boyfriend. The plan backfires, however, and she’s sent to live with her gambling-addicted mother. Michelle Morgan wrote the screenplay and Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini (American Splendor) are set to direct. In addition to starring in the film, Wiig will serve as executive producer.

New Details on Spike Lee’s OLDBOY Remake; Josh Brolin Top Choice to Play Lead Role
by Matt Goldberg Posted: July 12th, 2011 at 2:03 pm

It looks like the remake of Chan-wook Park’s Oldboy has finally caught fire. Yesterday, we reported that Spike Lee would direct the film and today we’ve learned some new details regarding the remake. Twitch, who first broke the story about Lee’s involvment, reports that Mark Protosevich’s screenplay borrows not only from the original South Korean film but also from the manga that inspired it. Furthermore, the screenplay is said to be similar to how The Departed adapted Infernal Affairs. Protosevich’s script reportedly borrows some elements from the pre-existing works, jettisons others, and introduces new material. The new material makes up about 20% of the remake’s screenplay.

Liev Schreiber, Liv Tyler, James Marsden and More Board ROBOT AND FRANK
by Adam Chitwood Posted: July 12th, 2011 at 1:37 pm

A number of actors have signed on for the family comedy Robot and Frank. Liev Schreiber, Liv Tyler, James Marsden, and Jeremy Strong join previously announced Susan Sarandon and Frank Langella in the Jake Schreier-directed indie. The comedy marks Schreier’s feature directorial debut. The script, by Christopher Ford, is set in the future and centers on an aging curmudgeon (Langella) whose kids (Marsden and Tyler) give him a caretaker robot (voiced by Schreiber), sparking an unlikely friendship with the lonely man. Sarandon plays a librarian who serves as Langella’s only friend.

Will Forte Joins Adam Shankman’s ROCK OF AGES
by Adam Chitwood Posted: July 12th, 2011 at 1:11 pm

Will Forte has joined Adam Shankman’s adaptation of the stage musical Rock of Ages. The film tells the story of a small town girl (Julianne Hough) who falls in love with a larger-than-life rocker (Tom Cruise) set against the backdrop of the 1980’s music scene, featuring songs from the likes of Journey, Foreigner, Styx, and REO Speedwagon.

THR reports that Forte will play the head anchor of a network news show in a role that was created specifically for the film adaptation. No word on whether or not the role calls for copious amounts of throat ripping. The cast now includes Cruise, Hough, Russell Brand, Paul Giamatti, Alec Baldwin, Malin Akerman, Bryan Cranston, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Mary J. Blige and Diego Gonzalez Boneta. Rock of Ages opens June 1st, 2012.

Federico Alvarez to Direct THE EVIL DEAD Reboot
by Phil Brown Posted: July 12th, 2011 at 11:56 am

If you’re Bruce Campbell or Sam Raimi, you must live in constant dread of being asked about the future of The Evil Dead franchise. There hasn’t been a new entry in the series for 19 years (unless you count the hilarious stage musical) and yet the franchise is currently more popular than ever. Today the internet is abuzz because Bruce Campbell tweeted that the long discussed Evil Dead remake will finally be kicking off in the next few months. Sam Raimi is currently in his old stomping grounds of Detroit finding a cast of fresh faces to be possessed and torn to bits. But while Raimi will be supervising the project through his company Ghost House Pictures, his commitment to Oz, The Great And Powerful will keep him out of the director’s chair. However, we’ve recently learned who will be directing the Evil Dead reboot for Raimi and it’s Uruguay-native Federico Alvarez. Don’t be surprised if you haven’t heard the name because he hasn’t directed a feature yet. We do have a short film of his for your viewing pleasure though and the guy just might have the talent it takes to make Deadites walk again. Hit the jump for more.

First Look at Fili and Kili in Peter Jackson’s THE HOBBIT
by Matt Goldberg Posted: July 12th, 2011 at 11:17 am

My grandfather had a saying. He said, “Matt, never roll out an image of all thirteen dwarves who accompanied Bilbo Baggins on the Quest of Erebor, when you can roll them out piecemeal and create greater awareness for The Hobbit.” I was the strangest piece of wisdom I’ve ever received, but now it’s starting to make sense. We’ve shown the dwarven brothers Nori, Ori, and Dori, and the dwarves Oin and Gloin (also brothers), and now its time for another set of dwarf bros: Fili (Dean O’Gorman) and Kili (Aidan Turner).

Hit the jump to check out the image and to learn more about Fili and Kili. The Hobbit also stars Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, James Nesbitt, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, and Andy Serkis. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be released on December 14, 2012. The Hobbit: There and Back Again will hit theaters on December 13, 2013. Both movies will be in 3D.
