First Trailer and 6 New Images for THE THING Starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton
by Matt Goldberg Posted: July 14th, 2011 at 12:10 pm

The trailer for Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.’s remake/prequel of The Thing has gone online. The film shares the same title of the classic 1982 John Carpenter film but takes place before the events of that movie. Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays paleontologist Kate Lloyd who works with a Norwegian scientific team that stumbles upon an ancient extraterrestrial ship in Antarctica. Fans of the original know that it’s safe to assume that matters go downhill from there. After watching this trailer, I’m have no idea what the new film brings to the table.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The film also stars Joel Edgerton, Eric Christian Olsen, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. The Thing opens October 14th. Click here to read Steve’s set visit.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Thing:
Antarctica: an extraordinary continent of awesome beauty.  It is also home to an isolated outpost where a discovery full of scientific possibility becomes a mission of survival when an alien is unearthed by a crew of international scientists.  The shape-shifting creature, accidentally unleashed at this marooned colony, has the ability to turn itself into a perfect replica of any living being.  It can look just like you or me, but inside, it remains inhuman.  In the thriller The Thing, paranoia spreads like an epidemic among a group of researchers as they’re infected, one by one, by a mystery from another planet.
Paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) has traveled to the desolate region for the expedition of her lifetime.  Joining a Norwegian scientific team that has stumbled across an extraterrestrial ship buried in the ice, she discovers an organism that seems to have died in the crash eons ago.  But it is about to wake up.
When a simple experiment frees the alien from its frozen prison, Kate must join the crew’s pilot, Carter (Joel Edgerton), to keep it from killing them off one at a time.  And in this vast, intense land, a parasite that can mimic anything it touches will pit human against human as it tries to survive and flourish.

Christina Hendricks, Dermot Mulroney, and Sarah Hyland Join Chris Colfer’s STRUCK BY LIGHTNING
by Jason Barr Posted: July 14th, 2011 at 9:40 am

Christina Hendricks, Dermot Mulroney, and Sarah Hyland (Modern Family) have joined the coming-of-age comedy Struck by Lightning. Written by and starring Chris Colfer (Glee), the pic recently began principal photography under the steady hand of director Brian Dannelly (Saved!) and is told in flashback from the perspective of a young man (Colfer) who was struck and killed by lightning. Per the press release, the guts of the film will document his “exploits as he blackmails his fellow senior classmates into contributing to a literary magazine he’s publishing.”

In addition to the cast already mentioned, Struck by Lightning also stars Angela Kinsey (The Office), Allie Grant (Weeds), Ashley Rickards (Fly Away), Polly Bergen (Desperate Housewives), and Brad Henke (Choke). A lot could be riding on the film for Colfer as it’s both his feature debut and, as we reported yesterday, he isn’t expected to return for season 4 of the show that made him a semi-household name, Glee. Here’s to hoping his television success can translate to the big screen. For a little more on the project and the three newly announced cast members, hit the jump for the full press release.

Melanie Laurent Starring Opposite Jesse Eisenberg in NOW YOU SEE ME; Kim Dickens Moves to the HEARTLAND
by Jason Barr Posted: July 13th, 2011 at 7:38 pm

We have a couple of casting bits to bring you tonight. First up, Melanie Laurent (Inglourious Basterds) has signed on to star opposite Jesse Eisenberg in the heist pic Now You See Me. Variety confirms Laurent’s place in the Louis Leterrier film which follows an FBI team as they track a group of the world’s greatest illusionists who rob banks and then “make it rain” on their audiences. Laurent can currently be seen alongside Ewan McGregor and Christopher Plummer in writer/director Mike Mills’ dramedy Beginners.

Next up, Treme‘s Kim Dickens has landed a role next to Dennis Quaid and Zac Efron in Killer Films’ . The pic tells the story of a father (Quaid) who wants nothing more than for his son (Efron) to take over the family’s Iowa-based seed business. Unfortunately for him, the son has his heart set on driving a race car. According to Deadline, Dickens will play the role of Efron’s mother, Irene. Dickens can next be seen on the silver screen in director Craig Brewer’s Footloose remake which hits theaters later this year on October 14th.
