Gregg Sulkin Joins WHITE FROG; Ari Graynor and Lauren Miller Pick Up FOR A GOOD TIME, CALL…
by Jason Barr Posted: July 14th, 2011 at 7:40 pm

We have a couple of casting bits to bring your way tonight. First up, Gregg Sulkin (Disney’s Wizards of Waverly Place) has signed on to the indie pic White Frog. The actor joins a cast that already includes Margaret Cho, Joan Chen, and B.D. Wong. According to Variety, Sulkin will play the son of a well-known lawyer who is having a difficult time in the wake of his best friend’s passing. Directed by Quentin Lee from a script by Ellie and Fabienne Wen, White Frog begins shooting next week in Los Angeles. In addition to Frog, Sulkin also has a role alongside Cary Elwes, Samantha Mathis, and Adelaide Clemens in the upcoming romance Camilla Dickinson.

Next, Ari Graynor (Whip It) and Lauren Miller (Superbad) have been cast as the leads in the indie comedy For a Good Time, Call…. Co-written by Miller with Katie Naylon, the pic tells the story of women who get the entrepreneurial itch and start a phone sex business. As is expected given the material, For a Good Time, Call… is expected to take on an R-rated tone and will begin shooting in Los Angeles next month. Per Risky Business, the film will be cameo friendly with Miller’s fiancee, Seth Rogen, being rumored for a potential role. Graynor will executive produce the pic with short-film/commercials director Jamie Travis making his feature directorial debut. Speaking of Graynor, the actress can be seen opposite Colin Hanks in the comedy Lucky which hits theaters this weekend.

Casting Call: Julia Stiles and America Ferrera Join IT’S A DISASTER, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Ivan Sergei to Star in JEWTOPIA
by Adam Chitwood Posted: July 14th, 2011 at 6:04 pm

We’ve got a couple of casting stories regarding some indie films for you this evening. First up, Julia Stiles and America Ferrera have signed on to star in Todd Berger’s (Scenesters) comedy It’s a Disaster. Deadline reports that the film centers around four couples who meet up for Sunday brunch when they’re suddenly stranded in a house as the world may be coming to an end. Berger himself and fellow The Vacationeers comedy troupe-mates Kevin M. Brennan, Jeff Grace, Blaise Miller will also star. Berger wrote and will direct the pic, which starts filming this fall.

Additionally, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Ivan Sergei (Crossing Jordan) are set to star in the film adaptation of the book and stageplay Jewtopia. The story centers on two childhood best friends who reunite as adults when one needs the other to help him pretend to be Jewish in order to woo a woman. Variety reports that Sergei will play the wannabe-Jew, while Hewitt will take on the role of the woman he’s in love with (she’s still appealing, right?) The tone is likened to Wedding Crashers and My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Bryan Fogel is directing from a cript he co-wrote with Sam Wolfson.

4 Clips from FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS Starring Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis
by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub Posted: July 14th, 2011 at 5:37 pm

Screen Gems has sent over 4 clips from Friends with Benefits. Directed and co-written by Will Gluck (Easy A), the romantic comedy stars Justin Timberlake, Mila Kunis, Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson, Richard Jenkins, and Patricia Clarkson. As you can probably tell by the title, the film tells the story of two friends (Timberlake and Kunis) who decide to give no-strings-attached-coitus the old college try. I’ve heard the movie is very funny. Hit the jump to watch the clips and look for video interviews with the cast next week. Friends with Benefits gets released July 22nd, 2011.

First Trailer for Martin Scorsese’s HUGO

It’s apparently official trailer day, as the first trailer for Martin Scorsese’s Hugo has just been released. The film, previously titled Hugo Cabret, marks the master director’s first foray into 3D as well as his first family-geared outing. I love the magical tone and sense of wonder Scorsese’s conjured up here, and it looks cute, but I don’t necessarily get a grandiose feeling from this first trailer. While his hand is very evident in the camera movements and overall feel of the shots, the footage seems a tad bit underwhelming. It may be the incongruous rock music that plays over 2/3’s of it, or the director may simply not want to reveal too much too soon. Either way, it’s hard to deny that the prospect of Scorsese, one of the foremost authorities on the history of cinema, tooling around with native 3D is pretty damn exciting.

First Official Image from TOTAL RECALL
by Matt Goldberg Posted: July 14th, 2011 at 2:02 pm
total-recall-movie-image-colin-farrell-ew-scan-01
After yesterday’s set photos, the first official image from Len Wiseman’s remake of Total Recall has gone online. In the image, Colin Farrell is apparently at the mercy of two guys playing paintball. When the film has its presentation at Comic-Con, will someone please go to the mic and ask Wiseman there will be anything half as creative as Kuato or the chick with three boobs in Paul Verhoeven’s original. Maybe the Comic-Con presentation will turn me around on this film but neither Wiseman’s filmography nor any of these Total Recall images have made me interested in this movie.

Hit the jump to check out the image. The film also stars Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, John Cho, Ethan Hawke, and Bryan Cranston. Total Recall opens August 3, 2012.

UNKNOWN Director Jaume Collet-Serra in Talks to Direct AKIRA
by Matt Goldberg Posted: July 14th, 2011 at 1:29 pm

Despite being a bad movie, Jaume Collet-Serra’s Unknown raked in $130 million worldwide off a $30 million budget. Collet-Serra’s been linked to a reimagining of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, a remake of Le Cercle Rouge, and possibly the 300 prequel Battle of Artemisia. Now Variety reports that he’s in talks to direct Warner Bros’ adaptation of the anime/manga Akira. You may recall that director Albert Hughes (The Book of Eli) left the project in late May and that Harry Potter screenwriter Steve Kloves handled the latest draft of the script. Warner Bros. is now envisioning the film as a $90 million tentpole. However, we previously reported that WB was planning on splitting the six-volume manga into two films so I’m not sure if the $90 million is supposed to cover both movies or just the first one.

However, even if Collet-Serra does come on board, Warner Bros. still faces the issue of casting the two lead roles of Tetsuo and Kaneda. The futuristic story has been reset from Neo-Tokyo to Neo-Manhattan and the broad overview of the story is that Tetsuo is the leader of a biker gang who has to stop his mutated friend Kaneda from destroying the city.
