First Trailer for Steven Soderbergh’s CONTAGION
by Adam Chitwood Posted: July 13th, 2011 at 4:53 pm
Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for director Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion, and it’s slightly terrifying. The film centers on a deadly virus outbreak, and at the beginning of the trailer the whole thing seems kinda silly (see: 1995’s Outbreak), but then the enormity of it hits and…well, you’ll see. With this being one of Soderbergh’s last efforts before retirement, combined with the incredible cast he’s assembled, Contagion has the makings of a fantastic thriller. This one was already high on my “most-anticipated” list, but after this trailer it has definitely jumped up towards the top.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film stars Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Marion Cotillard, Lawrence Fishbourne, Bryan Cranston, Demitri Martin and Elliott Gould. Contagion opens September 9th.

First Look at Bofur, Bombur, and Bifur in Peter Jackson’s THE HOBBIT
by Adam Chitwood Posted: July 13th, 2011 at 3:04 pm

The dwarf roll-out from Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit continues, as today we get our first look at the dwarves Bofur (James Nesbitt), Bombur (Stephen Hunter), and Bifur (William Kircher). This latest image comes on the heels of Jackson unveiling his Hobbit dwarves piecemeal, starting with Nori, Dori, and Ori, then Oin and Gloin, and yesterday we were introduced to Fili and Kili. While all the previous sets have been brothers, Bifur is simply Bofur and Bombur’s cousin, so naturally he’s an outcast marked by a severe lack of affection.

Hit the jump to see Bofur, Bombur, and Bifur, and learn a little about their background. The Hobbit stars Martin Freeman, Ian McKellan, Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, Christopher Lee and Andy Serkis. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be released on December 14, 2012. The Hobbit: There and Back Again will hit theaters on December 13, 2013. Both movies will be in 3D.

David Goyer to Write GODZILLA Reboot
by Matt Goldberg Posted: July 13th, 2011 at 1:56 pm

David Goyer is set to write Gareth Edwards’ upcoming Godzilla reboot. Deadline reports that Goyer will write a screenplay based off a draft by David Callaham. While Mike Fleming raves about how Legendary Pictures is smart to get a pro like Goyer on board because he’s had so much success launching franchises, but let’s look at the films Goyer directed because those are the scripts that are almost certainly 100% his: Blade: Trinity, The Invisible, and The Unborn. All of those movies are terrible. What about his ABC series Flash Forward? Also terrible, and then rightfully canceled. Yes, Goyer has a track record of having a screenwriting credit on movies that make a lot of money, but that doesn’t mean he writes good movies.

I’m also wary that “Legendary intends to approach the film and its characters in the most authentic manner possible,” because that’s not what I want out of a Godzilla movie. You can have authentic characters, but I don’t want “authenticity” out of a giant mutant lizard whose hobbies include destroying metropolitan areas and fighting other giant monsters.

Casting Call: Nick Frost a Dwarf in SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN, Scott Eastwood in TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 3D, Wendi McLendon-Covey is EXPECTING
by Adam Chitwood Posted: July 13th, 2011 at 1:39 pm

We’ve got a couple of casting stories for you this afternoon. First up, Variety reports that Nick Frost is in negotiations to take the last remaining dwarf role in Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman. Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron topline as Snow White, the Huntsman and the Evil Queen respectively. Frost joins an impressive list of actors playing the dwarfs that includes Ray Winstone, Ian McShane, Bob Hoskins, Toby Jones, Eddie Marsan and Steven Graham. Eddie Izzard was previously thought to be eyeing a dwarf role, but his name does not appear on this latest report. Snow White and the Huntsman hits theaters June 1st, 2012.

French Trailer for THIS MUST BE THE PLACE
by Matt Goldberg Posted: July 13th, 2011 at 1:05 pm

I’m still not sure what to make the goth Nazi-hunter dramedy This Must Be the Place. The reaction to the film at Cannes was bafflement and The Playlist thought “the film was pretty much like three different movies disjointedly mashed together.” Judging by the trailer, I can certainly see how that would be an issue. However, my greatest concern lies with Sean Penn who plays the lead role of Cheyenne, a former rock star who goes looking for a Nazi war criminal who tortured his father at Auschwitz. Penn’s delivery along with his hair and make-up screams at the viewer “I AM ACTING,” and the performance rings similar to his full-retard work from I Am Sam. In all fairness, The Playlist says the movie isn’t as bad as you’d expect, but my expectations at this point are for a total disaster.

Warner Bros. Picks up Untitled Spike Jonze/Charlie Kaufman Project; Joaquin Phoenix Attached to Star
by Matt Goldberg Posted: July 13th, 2011 at 12:16 pm

Back in March, we reported that Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures would back an untitled project from director Spike Jonze and screenwriter Charlie Kaufman (the duo behind Being John Malkovich and Adaptation.). The film would reportedly be a satire “about how world leaders gather to figure out all the seismic events that will take place in the worlds, from oil prices to wars that will be waged.” Twitch now reports that Warner Bros. has picked up the film, which means they will most likely distribute it as well. The project is reportedly eyeing a March 2012 start date.

Twitch also reports that Joaquin Phoenix is attached to star, which is a smart career move on his part. Phoenix needs to reestablish his credibility with audiences after the I’m Still Here debacle and working with directors like Jonze and Paul Thomas Anderson is a good way to do that.

New Set Photos from Len Wiseman’s Remake of TOTAL RECALL [Updated]
by Matt Goldberg Posted: July 13th, 2011 at 10:13 am
I’m not necessarily opposed to a remake of Total Recall. I’m opposed to a remake when the original was from interesting director Paul Verhoeven and the remake is by Len Wiseman, a director who thought blue was the only color his Underworld movies needed. The remake takes Mars out of the equation and has protagonist Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell) trying to find out if he’s a spy for the nation state of Euromerica or its rival New Asia. New set photos from the film have leaked online and they provide a look at storm trooper outfits, a car that looks like it was taken from Demolition Man, and a neat New Asian passport (I like that the passport has a QR Code).

Hit the jump to check out the set photos. The film also stars Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, John Cho, Ethan Hawke, and Bryan Cranston. Total Recall opens August 3, 2012. [Update: We've added more set photos after the jump.]

First Footage from Steven Soderbergh’s CONTAGION
by Matt Goldberg Posted: July 13th, 2011 at 9:47 am
We should be getting a trailer soon for Steven Soderbergh’s epidemic thriller Contagion, but because studios still think that anyone watches Entertainment Tonight, the show still gets to premiere footage from the latest movies which the ET anchors then proceed to ruin with their chirpy voiceovers. However, since I’m jazzed for this film and this is the first look we’re getting at the flick, I’ll begrudgingly encourage you to hit the jump to check out some brief footage. I’m hearing that the film is both epic in scope and truly terrifying.

Hit the jump to check out the footage. The film stars Matt Damon, Marion Cotillard, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Bryan Cranston, Kate Winslet, and Laurence Fishburne. Contagion opens September 9th.

Even if it’s lacking in every other discernible category, director John Luessenhop’s (Takers) The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D shouldn’t have any shortage of attractive female leads. Less than a week removed from making Alexandra Daddario (Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief) the first official member of its cast, the pic is now adding Lost‘s Tania Raymonde as well. Deadline reports that Raymonde will play the role of Nikki, a spunky small-town girl who is best friends with Daddario’s character, Heather.

Adam Marcus and Debra Sullivan co-wrote the film which takes place following the events of Tobe Hooper’s 1974 original. Production on Chainsaw 3D is set to begin in Louisiana later this month. Nu Image and Lionsgate will release the pic on October 5th, 2012. In addition to her work on Lost and now Chainsaw 3D, Raymonde also stars in MTV’s upcoming horror/comedy series Death Valley which is scheduled to premiere on August 29th.
