SDCC 2011: Sin City and Machete Sequels Moving Forward

Sin City 2 moving forward according to Robert Rodriguez
Director Robert Rodriguez's appearance at San Diego Comic-Con was chocked full of news on upcoming projects, including sequels to Sin City and Machete. Here's what he had to say about Sin City 2, which might finally happen this year, possibly in 3D.
"If Sin City 2 happens, it'll happen this year. I'd also love to do that in 3D - an idea that would translate really well to that format."

Robert Rodriguez also indicated that Sin City 2 will incorporate the graphic novel volume A Dame to Kill For, and two brand new stories written by Frank Miller, one of which is entitled The Long, Bad Night.

Machete is actually getting two sequels, according to Robert Rodriguez, who thanked the fans at his Hall H appearance for supporting the movie. Both sequels have been given the green light by Fox Searchlight, with the first sequel entitled Machete Kills.
"You guys were great about supporting Machete. The second one we're going right into now, Machete Kills."

The director also said that the other sequel, Machete Kills Again, will be a,
"space opera, a machete-shaped lightsaber. Machete kills in space."

In Time Trailer: Justin Timberlake Takes On A Sci-Fi Thriller

comments published: 2011-07-21 22:22:57 Author: Josh Tyler
Justin Timberlake seems poised to become the next breakout movie star and, though he’s starring in Friends with Benefits this weekend, odds are that movie won’t be significant enough to do the trick. What he needs is a big, summer, sci-fi blockbuster… and here it is.

In Time is Timberlake’s next big picture, and the premise plays out a lot like a modernized riff on Logan’s Run. He stars opposite Amanda Seyfried as a man in a dystopian future where time has become the only currency. What does that mean? An extended trailer for the film debuted at Comic Con today, check out the footage below to find out.

Somewhere out there someone’s still trying to remake Logan’s Run, but if this is as good as the trailer suggests, then maybe they’ll have the sense to cancel their plans. This seems to cover the subject pretty well. I’d rather have something like this, a new riff on an old premise, over a remake anyway.

Part of the reason this In Time trailer looks so good is director Andrew Niccol, who you may know as the guy behind Gattaca. He knows his way around smart, though-provoking, sci-fi films. It’s somewhat worrisome though that In Time is slated for release on October 28 of this year, and this is the first we’re hearing of it. October isn’t normally prime time for big, sci-fi blockbusters. That could mean trouble.

Bunraku Trailer Gives Josh Hartnett A Horrible Mustache

published: 2011-07-21 19:09:35 Author: Will LeBlanc
Bunraku is a wet dream for anyone who loves the hyper-stylized and the so far over the top that you can’t even see the top anymore. Rookie director Guy Moshe was given $25 million and a few top notch actors and seems to have delivered something that if nothing else will be big fun to watch. Josh Hartnett, Demi Moore, Woody Harrelson, and Ron Perlman star. Scope out the trailer below.
The film reminds me a lot of Takashi Miike’s Sukyaki Western Django, not in the setting but in that both films look sort of like what would happen if you took a few cameras on stage during an over produced Broadway show. The sets all look like stage sets, the lighting all looks like stage lighting and the actors all seem like they’re all playing to the back row. It’s a great look as long as the audience knows what they’re getting into when the buy their tickets. A style like that would be a rude awakening if you’re not expecting it.

It’s also really nice to see Ron Perlman getting some more film work lately with this as well as his role as Corin in the upcoming Conan the Barbarian reboot. He’s always been a favorite of mine and in Bunraku he looks every bit as badass as you’d expect a hulking, ape-like man to look. Plus, his immediate opposite in Bunraku is Demi Moore, whose slack he can easily pick up.

Look for Bunraku on September 1st on demand, and in select theaters September 30th.

Refn's Drive Trailer Is Here And Red Band

published: 2011-07-21 18:32:59 Author: Josh Tyler
We’ve been talking about the new movie from director Nicolas Refn for a few months now. Back in June when he caught it at a festival our own Eric Eisenberg called Drive brilliant, raving that movie lovers must “see Drive in big screens as many times as you can and only in the best theaters you can find.” Earlier today the first trailer debuted at Comic Con, and all indications are it blew everyone away. Now it can do the same to you.

The first ever trailer for Drive has arrived online, and they’re not wasting any time with material watered down for PG-13 audiences. They’re rolling with a restricted, red band trailer right out of the gate, and here it is:
I’m hooked. The cast is incredible. Albert Brooks seems to be on his game in a way he hasn’t been for years, he steals every second he shows up in the trailer. The action looks amazing, Ryan Gosling is as always stellar. This trailer delivers. Be ready. Drive shifts into theaters September 16 of this year.

The Raven's First Poster Is Written In Blood

published: 2011-07-21 17:25:14 Author: Josh Tyler
John Cusack is playing Edgar Allan Poe and, much as I loved Hot Tub Time Machine, at this point in his career it’s probably a good idea. The movie he’s doing it in is called The Raven and it’s a mystery-thriller in which the famously bummed out poet is enlisted by the police to hunt down a serial killer.

The movie’s first poster has arrived and while it doesn’t actually feature Cusack’s famous face (plenty of images showing him in full Edgar Allan Poe costume here) it’s still incredibly cool. Click the image below to see it in high-res.
