America Ferrara Finally Back On Screen For End Of Watch With Jake Gyllenhaal

published: 2011-07-25 13:57:45 Author: Katey Rich
America Ferrera shot to stardom by playing a role she was perfect for, the gawky but charming title character of Ugly Betty. Sure before then she'd starred in the indie hit Real Women Have Curves and the tween mini-franchise of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants movies, but Ugly Betty was the role that earned her Emmy nominations and a Golden Globe, and name recognition that has stayed put even with the show off the air. But since Betty ended its run in 2010, Ferrera has been flying very much under the radar, lending her voice to the tough Astrid in How to Train Your Dragon and appearing in the indie Our Family Wedding, but keeping remarkably quiet beyond that.

I suppose if you've decided to start finally getting attention again, teaming up with Jake Gyllenhaal is among the better ways to do it. Variety writes that Ferrera has signed on for the cop drama End of Watch, which Gyllenhaal has been attached to and now also stars Anna Kendrick. Ferrera will play a female cop with the last name Orozco, but she's listed as a "main supporting character," meaning she's probably not part of the police force pair that the story revolves around. The film will be directed by David Ayer, whose previous film Street Kings starred Keanu Reeves, Forest Whitaker, Hugh Laurie and Chris Evans as cops, and who also had a hand in writing cop dramas Training Day and S.W.A.T. It's probably fair to say this guy knows what he's doing when it comes to officers in uniform.

Given that Ferrera's only other upcoming project is the How To Train Your Dragon sequel, this will probably be our only chance to see her on the screen in the next year or so. Here's hoping she continues growing gracefully out of TV adolescence and into the talented adult actress we've seen glimpses of all along.

Machine Gun Preacher Image: This Is Not The Movie You Expect From The Title

published: 2011-07-25 16:17:32 Author: Eric Eisenberg
I'm willing to bet that on September 3rd there's going to be a lot of people that walk out of movie theaters saying "What the hell was that?" All of these people will be walking out of Machine Gun Preacher, which, despite its badass name, has a remarkably tame premise. Directed by Marc Foster, the film stars Gerard Butler as a former criminal who has a religious awakening and travels to East Africa. Shocked by what he sees in the Sudan, he works to create a safe haven for refugees escaping the Lord’s Resistance Army. Looking at the film's plot description instead of the title may help the first photo from the film make a lot more sense.

Featuring a bearded Butler in a safari vest and some Sudanese people, Relativity Media has sent over the first look, which you can also see in our
Blend Film Database. The shot doesn't really inform the viewer much about the movie other than suggesting that the star has taken a trip to Africa. Hopefully a trailer will be online soon to clear up any confusion, but I'm still holding out hope that this movie is more "machine gun" than it is "preacher."

See Bradley Cooper As Lucifer In Latest Paradise Lost Concept Art
published: 2011-07-25 12:41:20 Author: Sean O'Connell
Legendary Pictures brought their act to San Diego for the company’s first Comic Con panel (which our very own Katey Rich live-blogged the hell out of), and while most of the attention was paid to Guillermo del Toro’s monsters-and-robots-epics, Pacific Rim, the production house also teased concept art from Alex Proyas’s adaptation of John Milton’s Paradise Lost, which stars The Hangover lead Bradley Cooper as Lucifer. The first images teased at Comic Con boasted the expected amount of fire and brimstone, and you can take a look at them all HERE. But Legendary isn’t stopping there. A new piece of art featuring a scratchy glimpse of Cooper’s Lucifer has been posted on Legendary’s official blog. The up-close shot of some demonic, black eyes can be seen below:
While this isn’t exactly a full-court press for Paradise Lost, it is a lot of buzz for a picture that doesn’t have any other cast members in place and still needs to start shooting footage. I understand the need to have a presence at Comic Con, especially if you want the geek community behind your epic take on the battle between heaven and hell. But now that Legendary has lifted Paradise Lost onto everybody’s radar, it’s time they got down to business by fine-tuning the script, beefing up the special effects, and luring some top actors to its ensemble. Proyas, a proven sci-fi wizard with Dark City and I, Robot on his resume, has time. The picture isn’t due in theaters until next year. Let’s hope he’s ready to turn this concept art into a practical masterpiece. http://www.cinemablend.com/new/See-Bradley-Cooper-As-Lucifer-In-Latest-Paradise-Lost-Concept-Art-25886.html

Jennifer Lawrence For David O. Russell's Silver Linings Playbook

published: 2011-07-25 12:03:36 Author: Sean O'Connell
Jennifer Lawrence is close to lining up her first post-Hunger Games gig, as Deadline reports the Oscar-nominated starlet is “in the pole position” to join Mark Wahlberg in David O. Russell’s adaptation of The Silver Linings Playbook.

If she joins the production, Lawrence would play Tiffany, the next-door neighbor of Wahlberg’s character, Pat Peoples, a one-time teacher recently released from a mental institute where he was treated for depression. Now home and ready to assimilate back into society, Pat tries to reconnect with his estranged wife, Nikki, even though he has been locked away much longer than he realizes. Instead of successfully reuniting with his spouse, Pat bonds with his neighbor (Lawrence), who suffers from her own issues. The character has been described in previous stories as a "depressed woman who, when her husband dies, goes on a sexual spree, even at the cost of her job."

Lawrence is beating out a handful of impressive actresses who were interested in the role, including Rachel McAdams, Anne Hathaway and Blake Lively. And if Lawrence lands to role opposite Wahlberg, she could begin filming Silver Linings as soon as she wraps her part in Gary Ross’s anticipated adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games.

Playbook would be yet another casting feather in Lawrence’s cap, who has capitalized on her Oscar nomination for Winter’s Bone with meaty roles in Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men prequel, the Hunger Games series, and Mark Tonderai’s House at the End of the Street. Needless to say, studios likely wouldn’t be calling if Lawrence didn’t have the acting chops to back up all of this attention. But as Bone and The Beaver proved, Lawrence is a force we’ll be writing about for years to come.
