Charlize Theron Officially Joins PROMETHEUS

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: February 11th, 2011

Casting on Ridley Scott’s Prometheus seems to be moving right along. After mulling over the part for a while now, Variety reports that Charlize Theron has officially joined the cast as the character “Vickers”. What was previously developed as a prequel to Alien, Prometheus is a wholly original film from a script by Damon Lindelof (Star Trek, Lost). Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) is set to headline the film, with Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class) starring as well. Plot details are sparse but Scott maintains that keen fans will spot “Alien DNA” in the film. Prometheus is slated for June 3rd, 2012.

Noam Murro to Direct DIE HARD 5

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: February 11th, 2011

Die Hard 5 officially has a director, and it’s not exactly someone you expected. Noam Murro, best known for helming 2008’s Smart People starring Dennis Quaid and Sarah Jessica Parker, has been tapped by Fox to direct the latest installment of the Die Hard franchise. Skip Woods (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) has been on hand to write the screenplay since last May. However, earlier today we reported that Fox was unimpressed with Woods’ latest draft of the screenplay and is going back to the drawing board, with franchise star Bruce Willis taking an active role in development. Having a director on board should be helpful in crafting a successful script, but might Fox bring another writer in for some fresh perspective?
Though Murro is relatively unknown, THR’s report points out that he’s a highly acclaimed commercials director, having been nominated by the DGA for Director of the Year five times, as well as having won the Gold Lion at the Cannes Gold Lion awards. Hit the jump for more on Murro.

James Franco to Star in AKIRA?

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: February 11th, 2011

It looks like the big screen adaptation of the manga Akira may have found its star. A live-action version of Akira has been in the works for a while now, and most recently the Hughes brothers (The Book of Eli) were tapped to helm the project. Now, they may have found their lead. James Franco is apparently in talks to star in the film. Fair warning: there’s been no official confirmation that Franco is circling the project, so this could turn out to just be a rumor, but Just Jared is saying he’s very much involved.
Akira tells the story of a biker living in New Manhattan who saves his friend from a medical experiment. Zac Efron was the last actor rumored to be taking on the role. Franco’s name most recently came up regarding Sam Raimi’s Oz, the Great and Powerful. He’s apparently in talks to star in that film, and has also been rumored to be looking at the Linda Lovelace biopic Lovelace. The actor/director/writer/student will next be seen hosting the Academy Awards with Anne Hathaway on February 27th. I think we can all agree that Franco really likes doing things.

Guy Ritchie May Direct THE CANNONBALL RUN Remake

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 11th, 2011

Director Guy Ritchie (Sherlock Holmes) is rumored to be circling a remake of the 1981 Burt Reynolds flick The Cannonball Run.  According Badass Digest, Ritchie might direct a remake of the film this fall and he wants George Clooney to play the Reynolds role of J.J. McClure.  We’ve spoken to sources who can confirm that something is in the works.  I’m not sure about the Clooney part, but I can definitely see Ritchie taking on the concept of an illegal cross-country car race and applying his rapid-fire action-comic style.
For those unfamiliar with the original film, hit the jump for a synopsis.  We’ll be sure to update you once we know more about this potential project.
